As the sun sets on another day...
Cascades of gold and pink light up the azure sky as another day comes to an end. I can’t help but feel gratitude for the memories that were made today.
The day began as most days do, waking up and spending time thanking God for the opportunity to love my children, serve those who are in need, and dispelling any deceptions that linger in my mind as I plan our day.
The kids woke up and went straight outside to play with the newest members of the Gibson clan--a black and white named Furball, and an orange tabby named Elsa Orange. The joy these two kittens have brought to the kids is beyond words.
I prepared and ate my breakfast as usual, well at least for the past 6 days, and decided to post some thoughts on Instagram. I shared that for six days I have eating breakfast, lunch and dinner without snacking or including any sugar or flour. I have weighed and measured each meal carefully and prayed that it would be enough, or right. And I have lost 7 pounds as a result. Something that hasn’t happened in a long time.
Bright Line Eating entered my life at the exact time that God determined I was ready. The lies I’ve fed myself for years came to a head durning the Armor of God bible study. Alyse Sedivy posted that she was going to abstain from flour and sugar for 100 days and issued a challenge for thousands to do the same. I joined in.
Once in the group, I learned of the book that inspired her action. Bright Line Eating by Susan Pierce Thompson. I bought it that day and dove into it, absorbing the words, ideas, and research as if it were my last meal. Her ideas are nothing new. In fact, they’re quite old. Her research, however, is what transcends all of the former ideas I had about dieting. The idea that we can move our decision making skills surrounding food from the pre-frontal cortex to the area of the brain in which automaticity lives is absolutely what I need. To stop obsessing over food.
Alyse saw my tag in Instagram and instantly “liked” it in my messages. Within a few moments, my phone was ringing. The caller ID showed “Messenger Call: Alyse Sedivy” and I thought it was a practical joke--my mind playing tricks on me. I answered, and couldn’t believe that it was in fact Alyse on the other end. For those who aren't aware, Alyse is a Triple Presidential Diamond with dōTERRA and a rockstar mompreneur. I am in awe of her accomplishments and value her time, energy, and resources. She is an extremely generous person who I hope will forgive me for sharing some of her story.
We spent 30 minutes or so chatting about the BLE eating plan, our mutual struggles, hope, and vision for helping women overcome the one area of their lives that seems to be just out of reach: weight loss. She shared that she too had struggled and even contemplated quitting her BLE journey when a week into it, she hadn’t lost a single ounce. Like me, she must have achiever in her top strengths and committed to finishing what she started. Sixty days in, the magic happened. Her weight began melting off. She didn’t exercise, she didn’t bend the rules or cheat. She followed the plan and it worked. Along with 5 other women whom she was accountable, they have each lost the weight and kept it off for over two years.
That is the message that women need to hear. That was the message I needed to hear. Hope and freedom from food addiction, the yo-yo of weight loss and gain, and the constant self-deprecation each time it doesn’t work is exhausting for a woman, as well as the people closest to her who have to hear about it all the time. Let’s face it, we are community minded and feel that we need to share, vent, or explode all over people when it comes to our disappointments. Imagine a world where people were happy, thin, and free as described in Susan’s book!
It’s a choice we make, but it is grace that sets us free. The spiritual component, according to Alyse and based on my own experiences, enlightens us to the truth that we were meant to live healthy, abundant lives inside of miraculous bodies that we were given. But the deceptions and the half truths we believe and live by are sometimes more than we can fight alone.
Accountability is key--whether it is with a friend or to a spouse. We plan our days, our schedules, our clothing choices, our vacations, so why don’t we plan our meals? Sure, it’s hard. It’s hard to bring your food to lunch with a friend or explain that you appreciate that thoughtful treat but you don’t eat sugar and flour anymore. But being obese, overweight, in pain, and uncomfortable in your own skin is harder...isn’t it?
Today I didn’t obsess over food, self-flatulate over a binge, or even consider how many minutes of cardio/weight lifting I’d need to do to *undo* the pizza I had with my kids. I wasn’t angry or stressed or even sad about food or my body today. I planned my meals last night. I knew exactly what I was going to eat and that left my brain completely free to take in the joy of my kids splashing in the pool, playing with their new kittens, and snuggling on the couch at the end of the day.
That is the life I have chosen. These are my bright lines--faith, family, service, and abundance. I choose to share this because someone, somewhere, is reading this and feeling one of the following emotions:
1. She finally gets it! Yay Nicole!
2. I could never give up sugar and flour. I’m doomed.
3. I want to hope, but I’ve been there before without success. Why should this be any different.
I get it friends. From one food addict to another, you can change. You can choose bright lines. You can find your community and your motivation, and you can make eating automatic rather than the center of your joy and your pain. Health coaching is more than weight loss, more than meal plans and measurements. It’s the missing link to the chain of decisions that never seem to come together the way you envision. Whether you work with me or someone else, at least take a few moments to pray, hope, and learn what life could look like with Bright Lines.
