Essential Oils for Emotions
Before I dive in to the details of how you use essential oils to support your moods, I wanted to share a little back story. The truth is I have struggled with my emotions for decades--and I took all the treatments I was given by doctors, psychiatrists, and the internet. I have retyped this post three times, wondering why it is so dang hard to find the right words to explain something that is unbelieveably difficult for us to admit and talk about. What I concluded is that we are often dismissed as kids as being hormonal, as adults it's too much stress, and as aging parents, it's that we have teenagers driving us to reach for wine and pills. What I've learned is that the medical world is still figuring out how our bodies, minds, and emotions all work together to create the perfect storm and it the triggers constantly changed.
I spent years watching members of my family struggle with hormones, chemical imbalances, and childhood trauma rearing it's ugly head. I knew what it looked like to have mood changes. When it was my turn, at the ripe old age of high school, I was angry and frustrated that the only thing anyone could do for me was to give me pills that either made things worse, stopped me from feeling anything, or did nothing at all. That's when I discovered my hormones were actively working against me. Genetics played their role perfectly, and I found myself diving deep into the world of roller coaster rides. After being on various treatment plans, one finally worked for several years. Until I began fertility treatments, and then I was told it was not safe for pregnancy. Something shook me when they said that. If it wasn’t safe for pregnancy, they how was it safe for me at all?
When my son was born, it seemed like all of the struggle vanished into thin air. I was full of endorphins and my dopamine receptors were firing on all levels each time I looked at his face. Until the hormone surges began. Once again, I was facing dark days. Something happened around that time that I didn’t look for, expect, or even consider real—a friend shared essential oils for my son’s colic. Not just any essential oils, though; these were literally the best in the world.
For the first time in my life, I found hope that maybe these little brown bottles of plant extracts could support whatever part of me I had been told was broken. I couldn’t be on anti-depressants while breastfeeding, and there’s that whole thing mothers do with the sacrificing themselves for the sake of their kids. I hadn’t taken anything for my anxiety and depression in months. What if one of those brown bottles had the ability to help support my moods and still allow me to breastfeed? Friend, I am a dog with a bone when it comes to making sure my tiny humans are safe, loved, and cared for as naturally as possible. That’s when I discovered the power of essential oils for supporting our emotions.
Using essential oils for everyday physical needs is something I learned fairly quickly. I can use tea tree oil and breathe to help relieve respiratory symptoms. I can use Deep Blue to soothe aches and pains. Rubbing peppermint over my forehead, temples, and jawline can relieve pressure. Frankincense pressed to the roof of my mouth is simply divine for supporting my brain pain.
The release is almost immediate. However, the root cause of it all is harder to fix. To relieve the stress and anxiety, the overwhelm and the emotional pressure, we need more. It requires time to sit and reflect on the emotions that we spend all day repressing and ignoring. Praying, meditating, and allowing ourselves to sit and actually feel the things that are causing us pain is something that essential oils can help with.
Deep breathing, 2 minute gratitude journaling, meditation, eating right, moving your body, and more are detailed in another blog post, but when those actions are combined with the use of essential oils, the effects are deeper and more obvious. When we combine the power of essential oils, the power of prayer and positivity, and the power of determination, our physical bodies respond to our emotional needs as quickly as two seconds.
Recipes are a guideline, but opening a bottle and feeling relief from any oil is just as effective.
Nothing external can heal what is going on internally. For that, you need to do the work of identifying the reason’s for the emotional distress and then working even harder to heal it. I’m not a psychologist or psychotherapist. What I know is that when I open a bottle of essential oils, my olfactory center immediately has a reaction that is sent to my brain: it helps me feel peaceful, energetic, or calm.
That said, there is some science behind why this happens. Just as we smile or feel comfort when we smell a perfume that our grandmother wore, or a dish she used to bake, the aroma in an essential oil can similarly trigger a response that brings us a feeling of comfort or joy. It is how our bodies know when there is a fire and we need to be cautious or when something is food and good to eat.
So let’s break down some of the oils I like to have on hand for quick support when I’m feeling anxious, overwhelmed, need joy, or focus. In each situation, I simply open the bottle, place a drop in the palms of my hands and rub them together, and then I inhale deeply for 60 seconds.
Deep Blue Blend: release the pain caused by others and surrender your anger and turmoil.
Arborvitae: release the need to control the outcome of a situation.
Basil: release the tension that leads to lack of energy and stress.

While all essential oils have emotional benefits, and this list is in no way exhaustive, it is where I like to start. These oils have repeatedly given me relief on my heaviest days and moments. In addition, I have a couple of recipes I’d like to share that are always good to carry in your pocket or purse, and as always, supplement suggestions.
I drank Wild Orange in my water for months to support my postpartum mood swings. The sweet fragrance and flavor made me smile and supported my energy levels. Unlike anything I had ever known before, essential oils had the ability to support my mood in seconds, not days or weeks. But, when I took a challenge to try Lifelong Vitality (LLV) for thirty days, my love affair with Wild Orange was quickly overshadowed. I fully intended to take advantage of the dōTERRA promise of a full refund if they didn’t work, but being a curious human, I wanted to also make sure I documented the effects. I’d been on vitamins for pregnancy, fertility, and as a teenager (Flinstones were my favorite), and I had never felt any differently on them or off of them. My expectations were low for the LLV supplements. To be honest, I couldn’t wait to say “I told you so” and return them for a full refund.
The joke was on me. After a full week of taking these pills, (12 a day was a lot), I found myself drinking less wild orange, coming home and getting things done after school, and sleeping deeply each night. Week two had a few surprises as well: no need for DigestZen to support my digestive system, fully awake and focused during classes all day, and genuinely happy. By the end of the 30 days, I felt better than I had in years. Still the skeptic, I didn’t reorder. Two weeks later, I had hit a dark patch, walked out the door and left my husband and son to fend for themselves, and spent a few hours just driving around crying.
When I came home, my husband looked at me with sadness and commented that he thought the LLV was working and helping me. Why had I stopped? Suddenly, I stopped crying, stopped wondering how we could afford them, stopped trying to convince myself I could handle life on my own, and realized that I had to find a way to get LLV into our budget. I haven’t missed a single day in seven years.
I still have days where I need a little extra, but the amazing part is that I have all of the tools I listed above and more when those days come. I detoxed my home and stopped using products that have known carcinogens, hormone disrupters, and carefully avoid them even when I’m not home.
Using essential oils from dōTERRA is safe. Their results are effective. The cost is affordable. You deserve the world’s best, to be mentally healthy, and to feel like the you that you really are.
